Now, the company is helping geologists and researchers explore mineral deposits in Central Asia and Kazakhstan. Microavia’s advanced aerial surveying platform, Fortis, provides detailed information about an area’s geological structure, reducing task times by half and drastically cutting costs.

“We have successfully concluded all preflight tests with Microavia Fortis. A special feature of their geodrone is their ability to stay in the air for up to 60 minutes. The drone can carry up to 12 kg of payload. [and has] shown high efficiency in conducting aeromagnetic surveys due to the stability of the flight direction even in strong winds and long flight time,” explained Kirill Bazhin, CEO of Geodevice Kazakhstan.

Microavia drones hover at low altitudes between 40 and 100 meters, scanning the ground in 400-meter-wide sections. Hundreds of miles of land can be surveyed in days instead of weeks or months, and mineral exploration missions can now be undertaken in previously inaccessible areas.

The introduction of these cutting-edge services comes from Dronamics, the world’s first cargo drone airline, with fleet management capabilities provided by partner firm Aramex.

Dubai authorities have already showcased drone deliveries for a wide range of goods within the government-owned Silicon Oasis free zone under the watchful eye of the Civil Aviation Authority.

Now, more widespread consumer drone deliveries are being planned, with trials to start as early as 2024. The autonomous craft will be equipped with cutting-edge connectivity and navigation systems, as well as parachutes and collision-avoidance technology.

Alaa Saoudi, Aramex Chief Operating Officer, said, “The cargo hold should be able to give us 3.5 cubic meters of space, which would be good for quick turn-around operations within our express middle mile operations. But it can be utilized for customers with larger consignments in the last mile as well”.

The drones will enable same-day and long-range deliveries, offering up to 80% faster deliveries at half the cost. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide emissions for drone freight are said to be 60% less than those of traditional transport vehicles.

Dronamics’ remotely-piloted machine is known as Black Swan. The drone requires just 400 meters to land and take off, making it a viable solution for remote deliveries where traditional airports are either missing or underdeveloped.

If the Aramex and Dronamics collaboration proves successful, further joint deployments will be possible, with the two tech firms eying up key markets, including Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Australia.

PixieDrone can operate autonomously for around six hours, collecting and sorting up to 160 liters of organic waste, plastic, glass, paper, metal, cloth, and rubber.

LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sees images in 3D, allowing PixieDrone to quickly understand its surroundings, much like the latest autonomous cars.

Created by French company Searial Cleaners, PixieDrone can travel at 3 kph for up to 12 km on a single charge. The company’s website does note that the robot can operate at a maximum ambient temperature of 50°C, which could eventually become an issue in the UAE’s sweltering summer heat.

Measuring 1.62 by 1.15 meters, the robot cleaner is able to fit into tight spaces. Searial Cleaners says the device is specifically built for harbors and coastal aquatic areas.

PixieDrone is not the first waste collection floating drone to work in UAE waters. In 2018, Dubai Marina used WasteShark, made by the Dutch company RanMarine, to collect waste and test air and water quality.

“It all depends on the graders,” explains CEO Eugene Grankin. “If they rate us well, we could soon get the permission to fly in Abu Dhabi.” Grankin has good reason to be confident. In 2021, after a tropical cyclone hit Oman, UVL drones were successfully deployed to deliver supplies. “We could deliver medicine to remote areas where it took a long time to reach by car,” the CEO explained.

Today, UVL Robotics is focused on inventory management as well as delivery. In Europe, UVL drones can scan 300-750 pallets in under five seconds. The company now uses drones to perform stocktaking at more than 50 warehouse locations, with global companies like PepsiCo utilizing the service.

In the Middle East, sustainability and CO₂ reduction are the primary drivers of drone adoption. Saudi Arabia plans to cut carbon emissions by 278 million tonnes per year, while the UAE has plans to reduce its own output by 31%. Research conducted by UVL found that drones produce 36% fewer emissions than moving the equivalent load volume by truck, despite each UAV having a payload of just 10kg.

As well as reducing CO₂, drones can also improve operational efficiency. In Oman, coastlines and rugged terrain mean that food deliveries typically take 30-60 minutes by human courier. With drones, that time is cut to a predictable 15 minutes. In addition, drones can handle over 30 orders daily, compared to just 20 when delivered by regular vehicle.

Meanwhile, at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, UVL Robotics is preparing to launch campus-wide smart loading stations, which the company hopes will act as a blueprint for future smart city projects across the region.

The initiative is part of the logistics company’s “future delivery program,” which aims to improve last-mile shipping by employing smart solutions for “quicker, sustainable and cost-effective deliveries”.

Initial tests took place at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York in partnership with Barq EV, a commercial drone delivery company based in the Emirates, and Kiwibot, a Colombia-based business specializing in delivery robotics.

“[The project] enables Aramex to further contribute to UAE’s sustainability ambitions as we embark on our mission to transition our fleet to emission-free vehicles and achieve our climate pledge to reach carbon neutrality by 2030,” says Alaa Saoudi, Aramex Chief Operating Officer.

Aramex has already revealed plans to scale delivery services further to reach more customers across the MENA region, though there’s no firm timeline at the moment.

The drones and delivery robots used in Dubai will be equipped with multidirectional sensors. At the same time, fleet management software will help to synchronize and plan order placements, dispatch management, flight and road routing, and more.

According to data from research company Markets and Markets, the drone delivery market is estimated to be worth $228 million — a figure that will climb to $5.6 billion by 2030. e-Commerce giant Amazon has already started delivering some California and Texas packages by drone, and Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer, already offers autonomous delivery in some areas.

DJI claims its latest drone can fly for 31 minutes on a fully-charged battery, which is roughly the same as the outgoing model, adding just one extra minute of flight. As for the rest of the drone’s specs, things look pretty identical to the previous model. The Mini 2 SE tips the scales at 249 grams and retains the existing camera system with a three-axis gimbal and 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor able to capture 2.7K video and 12MP stills.

The Mavic 3 Classic costs $1,469 for the base unit, though this will end up at more like $1,599 or $1,749 when teamed with either a DJI RC-N1 or DJI RC controller, respectively. The Mavic 3 Classic’s 24mm equivalent lens can record video at 5.1K / 50fps, 4K / 60fps, and 1080p / 60fps using H.264 and H.265 encoding, while slo-mo footage can be captured at 4K / 120fps and 1080p / 200fps. If you want to download images and video directly from the drone, you’ll enjoy 80MB per second transfer speeds when using a Wi-Fi 6 connection.

Newbie Friendly Features

The Mavic 3 Classic looks to be the perfect drone for newcomers to the hobby, sporting features like automated quick shots and a cruise control feature for nervous pilots. When in this mode, the drone flies at a set constant speed, allowing you to focus on photography without the risk of a crash.

The drone can independently plan its own routes to weave around hazards, thanks to eight visual sensors feeding information to an APAS 5.0 obstacle avoidance system. Like many other models, it can also return to home when a connection is lost or if the battery pack is running low.

Availability And Regulations

The Mavic 3 Classic is available now, though you’ll have to check local regulations to ensure it’s legal in your region. In Europe, for example, drone pilots can fly the Mavic 3 Classic in the A1 Open Category without obtaining a remote piloting license.

UVL Robotics, a company from the United States, partnered with the logistics firm to bring its class-leading AI and drone solutions to the project, which will eventually also include autonomous vehicles. The Future Delivery Program is about creating cost-based savings and reducing environmental impact by lowering carbon emissions and traffic congestion during the last-mile section of deliveries.

Aramex is already embarking on a full-scale transition to electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with drone and autonomous vehicle-based deliveries complementing the emission-free fleet.
