The third edition of the Dubai Future Forum is now on its second day at the iconic Museum of the Future. By the time doors close later today, 2,500 thought leaders from 100 nations will have gathered at an event that organizers have described as “the world’s premier gathering of futurists”.

Kicking off the proceedings, His Excellency Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), remarked: “Over the next 12 months, we won’t just witness change — it will be a series of era-defining moments. The future is evolving faster than we, or even our ancestors, could have ever envisioned. […] We are entering an era where every industry must embrace future design and transformation — or risk being left behind”.

Empowering Future Generations & Strengthening Local Communities

In a panel titled “From Deep Space to Deep Ocean – A Journey of Exploration and Discovery,” Sara Sabry, the first Arab and African female astronaut, urged governments to create more opportunities for young people in their home countries. Addressing the issue of brain drain during her session at the forum, she emphasized the necessity of building robust local ecosystems.

The panel then delved into how exploration fosters optimism, strengthens resilience, and addresses critical global issues like climate change and biodiversity conservation. The discussion spotlighted the Arab world’s potential to lead the field in space, oceanic, and Earth sciences.

Technological Innovations In Exploration

Prof. Oussama Khatib, an expert in deep-sea robotics and leader of the OceanOneK project, discussed how robotics are aiding underwater exploration.

“Technology today allows us to touch, operate, and intervene at 1,000 meters underwater. This is a gamechanger for how we interact with our planet,” he said, pointing out how recent advancements could inspire Arab inventors and developers across the region.

National Geographic Explorer Suaad Al Harthi also added to the discussion by explaining how cutting-edge technologies are helping conservation: “Technology like satellite telemetry enables us to monitor ecosystems we can’t physically access, allowing us to conserve biodiversity and tackle climate challenges more effectively,” she explained.

Redefining Time

A fireside chat entitled, “Concepts of Time: How Do They Shape Our Future?” drew plenty of interest, with experimental philosopher Jonathan Keats leading the discussion.

Keats, creator of the Millennium Camera project, which captures a single image over a thousand years, emphasized the value of speculative long-term thinking: “If we only think about today’s problems using today’s tools, we reinforce those problems. What we desperately need is an outside perspective — history can provide that, but so can the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anne Beate Hovind, Chair of the Future Library Trust, also joined the conversation, “I love practical utopias — dreams within reach. These are visions we can create tomorrow. Young people often have a different understanding of time; they’re impatient for change. We need to show them that their actions today can shape the long-term future,” she said, encouraging collaboration across generations to build sustainable solutions.

Honoring The Sci-Fi Visionaries Of Tomorrow

Finally, the event also celebrated winners of the DFF’s inaugural sci-fi writing competition, “Echoes of Tomorrow.” Mohammad Abu Hawash took first prize with “The Interstellar Haj,” exploring the theme of transforming humanity. Second place went to Zainab BH for “The Lifeline,” and Killian MacDonald claimed third with “The Last Selkie.” The top ten stories will be published on the Dubai Future Forum website, showcasing some of the diverse and thought-provoking visions of humanity’s future.

Prospective second-hand car buyers in Dubai will soon be able to check a vehicle’s accident history in real-time, according to an announcement by the emirate’s police force. Law enforcement officials recently explained that a new system will use artificial intelligence (AI) to help buyers gain access to valuable data about crashes a car has been involved in, as well as its current mechanical condition.

Dubai Police have also announced the integration of AI into 29 administrative operations across multiple departments, with minor accidents also set to be analyzed and logged by AI-powered algorithms.

dubai police employs new ai features

Currently, Dubai drivers submit accident details for manual review by a police officer before a report is created. The new technology will instead use AI to analyze accident details and issue reports to both parties involved in minor traffic incidents.

It’s believed that the new tech could reduce accident report processing times from seven hours to four, and the service will soon be available on the Dubai Police app and through its web portal.

Major-General Khalid Nasser Alrazooqi, director of Dubai Police’s AI department, said the force has updated its app to offer 70 services in seven languages. Local police officers even have a virtual team member called Amna, who holds the rank of first lieutenant and is able to answer queries in Arabic and English. In 2023, Amna had already completed 20,000 conversations with the public.

As Dubai continues to deploy smart technology to improve its infrastructure, law enforcement is becoming increasingly automated. Since the beginning of this year, an AI-powered Smart Police Station (SPS) has operated without human officers, receiving 127,515 visitors and processing 36,376 transactions.

On Sunday, April 28th, Dubai’s HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum gave the go-ahead to a major expansion project for Al Maktoum Airport (DWC).

The development will add a new passenger terminal to DWC, marking a major step in the emirate’s goal to transform the global transport hub into the world’s largest airport by 2050.

The construction project is valued at a massive $34.8 billion (AED128 billion), and is necessary to accommodate the projected surge in air travel over the coming years.

The DWC expansion plans were reportedly shelved in 2019. However, the project regained traction under the airport operating company Dubai Airports, who manage both Dubai International Airport (DXB) and DWC.

dubai al maktoum airport expansion

“HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed the strategic plan of the #Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects and approved designs for the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, which will be the largest in the world when fully operational,” announced the Dubai government on X, noting that the new terminal will increase annual capacity to over 260 million passengers.

Under the comprehensive development plans, Al Maktoum Airport will surpass the scale of Dubai International Airport by fivefold. Eventually, all of Dubai International’s operations will be moved to the new site.

Dubai Airport CEO Paul Griffiths has emphasized the need for a new facility as DXB airport approaches its maximum annual capacity of 120 million passengers, explaining that the new development will transform airport operations.

“We are not planning an airport that has terminals. We’re going to completely change the business model for airports, make them far more intimate, and get rid of all the legacy processes that we’ve had to subject our customers to for far too long,” Griffiths stated.

Global crypto exchange Binance has been granted a full operational license in Dubai, in a move that’s expected to accelerate digital asset adoption and strengthen the UAE’s regulatory landscape.

The virtual asset service provider license (VASP) was granted by the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) and will allow Binance to extend its current range of services to retail investors, the company announced yesterday.

The move by Dubai authorities will be critical to Binance’s strategy of growing its user base globally. The crypto exchange expects to pass the 200 million user mark “quite shortly”, according to Richard Teng, the company’s CEO.

Once that milestone is achieved, Binance will have around twice as many users as rival platform Coinbase. Meanwhile, Crypto.com, another popular exchange with 80 million users, received a Dubai VASP license last week.

“We’re seeing much greater institutional adoption and institutional money coming into this space [along with] much greater regulatory clarity and a lot more jurisdictions approving [digital asset] products that bring in new investor classes,” Binance’s Richard Tang explained, adding: “As of now, we stand at about 5% crypto adoption globally, but that will become much faster moving forward”.

Dubai and the UAE are extremely supportive of technologies like digital assets, and have already launched initiatives to boost adoption. The UAE has ambitious plans to become a world leader in the crypto economy of the future, with Dubai in particular being noteworthy for passing a new law to regulate virtual assets to support investors and exchanges.

“Global crypto regulation is currently showing diverging signs. Some developed countries have long suffered from crypto-related frauds and illegal exchanges. On the other hand, emerging nations like the UAE and Singapore have enacted crypto laws at faced pace,” said Vijay Valecha, chief investment officer of Dubai-based Century Financial.

As the UAE gears up to become one of the fastest-growing crypto capitals worldwide, investors and talent are flocking to places like Dubai. During 2023, the Emirates as a whole realized $204 million in capital gains from cryptocurrency investments, according to blockchain data analysts Chainalysis.

A Dubai-headquartered aviation company has signed an agreement with Dutch firm PAL-V to bring their groundbreaking flying cars to the Middle East.

Aviterra, a manufacturer of aviation and aerospace components, will purchase over 100 Liberty flying cars and directly invest in the European aviation company, they revealed in a recent joint statement.

At $799,000, the two-seat Liberty is a costly vehicle predominantly aimed at high-end, corporate, and government clients and individuals with very deep pockets. Described by PAL-V as a “personal aircraft for daily medium and long-distance commutes,” the Liberty combines a gyroplane and three-wheeled car with collapsable propellers and tail fins stored on the roof.

In car mode, the vehicle can reach 100 kph in under nine seconds and has a top speed of 160 kph. Changing into aircraft modes takes around five minutes, with the helicopter-like blades rising from the roof and the tail fins extending up and out from the rear. Finally, the car’s rear jacks up, and two hatches open to deploy the rear-facing propeller.

As an aircraft, the Liberty has a range of between 400 and 500 km and a maximum speed of 180 kph. It can reach an altitude of 11,000 feet and requires a runway (or straight road) of at least 200 meters for both takeoff and landing.

The current batch of Liberty flying cars run on regular gasoline but will eventually be configured as EVs “once batteries get lighter”, according to Robert Dingemanse, CEO and founder of PAL-V.
