GITEX GLOBAL 2024, recognized as the world’s premier tech and startup gathering, hosted the largest data center event in the Middle East on Thursday at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). The event showcased the region’s ambition to solidify its leadership in the rapidly growing global data center industry.

The conference spotlighted the significant role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming data infrastructure. Leading enterprises offered attendees a glimpse into cutting-edge innovations, setting the stage for the future of hyperscale, modular, and edge data centers.

The “Data Centres Universe” segment of the event focused on how growth is being achieved within the sector. Key players such as Khazna, Legrand, Vertiv, Alibaba Cloud, AWS, DELL, Google Cloud, IBM, and Lenovo gathered to share insights on the industry’s trajectory. They explored strategies for accelerating growth and highlighted the role of expanding data centers in fostering AI-powered innovation.

During a panel discussion, Hassan Al Naqbi, CEO of Khazna Data Centers, emphasized that the development of data centers not only fuels market growth but also drives talent development and job creation. Al Naqbi dispelled the misconception that data centers are not job generators, stating: “Data centers are vital for economies and have different roles involved. If you look at all the hyperscales, their data centers are having a huge impact on the economy as people can secure jobs which are vital for the day-to-day operations”.

The conversation also shifted to the future, with industry experts stressing the importance of sustainability in their expansion as next-generation technologies and services continue to evolve.

A cutting-edge smart security system designed to detect unusual activity inside homes has been launched in Dubai. Unveiled during GITEX GLOBAL 2024, the system was introduced by Dubai Police in partnership with e& UAE to improve the safety of both homes and properties.

According to the Dubai Police website, the advanced system utilizes motion detectors capable of distinguishing between everyday activities and potential threats. Discreet door and window sensors are strategically placed at entry points, detecting unauthorized access and immediately triggering an alert to a 24/7 monitoring center. A touchscreen hub serves as the control panel, enabling users to manage all connected devices.

Masood M Sharif Mahmood, CEO of e& UAE, stated, “For the first time in the UAE, we are integrating IoT-based home security systems with immediate police response to detected movements. This is a significant step towards transforming residential areas into smart, secure environments”.

The system uses state-of-the-art IoT sensors that detect irregular activities, paired with surveillance cameras that are monitored around the clock by e& UAE security centers. This setup ensures that any suspicious movement triggers an immediate response. The system can also be linked directly to a specialized operations room, allowing authorities to take swift action to verify any potential threats.

Customers will receive real-time alerts through a mobile app when any unusual activity is detected. They have the option to manage the system independently or connect it to a specialized monitoring center for further support, according to a statement by Dubai Police.

As the primary technology provider, e& UAE handles the system’s entire operation, from customer registration and installation to ongoing maintenance and technical support. The Dubai Police will oversee the integration for customers who choose to link their systems to the specialized operations room.

The cybersecurity landscape has changed dramatically since the outbreak of the pandemic. Many organizations have embraced the hybrid work model as the new normal, allowing their employees to divide their work time between the office and home.

As a result, the traditional network perimeter has dissolved, leaving organizations more vulnerable to cyber threats, which are becoming not only more frequent but also more sophisticated. MENA organizations are especially vulnerable because of their geopolitical position and importance to the world economy in several key industries, such as the oil industry.

Recently, Los Angeles-based cybersecurity company Resecurity has introduced its Dark Web Monitoring and Threat Intelligence solutions at GITEX 2021, which took place at the Dubai World Trade Center, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Resecurity’s mission is to protect enterprises of any size, market vertical and in any geography,” said Ayman Alshobaki, Resecurity’s Business Development Manager for the MENA region. “Resecurity is excited to tap into the fantastic networking and innovative atmosphere at Gitex 2021, allowing us to build new business alliances and accelerate market presence and channel sales”.

The new solutions leverage big data analytics and artificial intelligence to provide visibility into the global threat landscape, helping organizations mitigate risks coming from the darkest corners of the internet, which are commonly referred to as the dark web.

The main defining feature of the dark web is the fact it’s completely invisible to most internet users because it can be accessed only using specialized software, such as Tor, which also provides anonymity, something cybercriminals value deeply.

Equipped with Resecurity’s Dark Web Monitoring solutions, organizations in the MENA region and the rest of the world are much less likely to suffer a costly data breach, whose average cost has reached $4.24 million per incident — the highest in the last 17 years.
