A cutting-edge smart security system designed to detect unusual activity inside homes has been launched in Dubai. Unveiled during GITEX GLOBAL 2024, the system was introduced by Dubai Police in partnership with e& UAE to improve the safety of both homes and properties.

According to the Dubai Police website, the advanced system utilizes motion detectors capable of distinguishing between everyday activities and potential threats. Discreet door and window sensors are strategically placed at entry points, detecting unauthorized access and immediately triggering an alert to a 24/7 monitoring center. A touchscreen hub serves as the control panel, enabling users to manage all connected devices.

Masood M Sharif Mahmood, CEO of e& UAE, stated, “For the first time in the UAE, we are integrating IoT-based home security systems with immediate police response to detected movements. This is a significant step towards transforming residential areas into smart, secure environments”.

The system uses state-of-the-art IoT sensors that detect irregular activities, paired with surveillance cameras that are monitored around the clock by e& UAE security centers. This setup ensures that any suspicious movement triggers an immediate response. The system can also be linked directly to a specialized operations room, allowing authorities to take swift action to verify any potential threats.

Customers will receive real-time alerts through a mobile app when any unusual activity is detected. They have the option to manage the system independently or connect it to a specialized monitoring center for further support, according to a statement by Dubai Police.

As the primary technology provider, e& UAE handles the system’s entire operation, from customer registration and installation to ongoing maintenance and technical support. The Dubai Police will oversee the integration for customers who choose to link their systems to the specialized operations room.

e& Carrier & Wholesale is preparing to lay the most extensive subsea cable network in UAE, dubbed “2Afria”. The chosen gateway for this significant communications upgrade is Kalba, a tranquil city in the northeastern United Arab Emirates. This strategic choice augments e&’s existing Fujairah cable landing station, diversifying connectivity in the UAE and hopefully boosting network resilience.

The 2Africa consortium of Bayobab, including centre3, China Mobile International, Meta, Orange, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group, and WIOCC, is behind the massive 45,000 km submarine cable system, which is currently the largest of its kind worldwide.

Alcatel Submarine Networks is responsible for building and installing the 2Africa cable, which will deliver essential internet capacity and reliability upgrades across substantial swathes of Africa while also addressing growing network demand across the Middle East.

As the UAE designated landing partner for 2Africa, e& will be in charge of the development and construction of the necessary infrastructure for the landing station as well as maintenance over the coming decades.

Nabil Baccouche, e& Group Chief Carrier & Wholesale Officer, explained: “The 2Africa project promises to elevate the overall digital landscape in the region, solidifying the country’s position as one of the region’s premier ICT hubs. e &’s involvement in this transformative project will significantly enhance the Internet user experience in the UAE, enabling the world’s largest content providers and global carriers to deliver cutting edge technology in e& carrier-neutral data center ecosystem, SmartHub”.

e& has announced a new $400 million deal with Uber, and its local subsidiary Careem. The technology and investment group will acquire a majority stake in the Careem Super App, though the ride-hailing service will remain in Uber’s ownership and continue to offer its existing food delivery, micro-mobility, and fintech services to customers across the MENA region.

“We are excited to bring e& into the family. Their passion for uplifting the region and the synergies across their portfolio is extremely valuable. With two strong partners in e& and Uber, I have no doubt that we will build the preeminent technology platform of the region,” says Mudassir Sheikha, Careem CEO, and co-founder.

Careem will use the investment to expand core services and the Careem Plus subscription program, with the aim of becoming North Africa and the Middle East’s “everything app”.

Careem expects significant benefits from the e& partnership, including access to a customer base of 163 million subscribers across 16 countries. The investment will also unlock e&’s extensive experience in scaling complex tech ventures into new regions.

“The shared vision between e& and Careem is exciting, and we believe that together we’ll be able to enhance our impact across different markets in the region while pushing the boundaries of customer experience,” says e& Group CEO Hatem Dowidar.

Since being acquired by Uber in 2020, Careem has evolved into a multi-service app offering more than 12 individual services. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, UAE food delivery subsidiary Quik has grown 46X, with orders increasing by 86%. Meanwhile, micro-mobility service Careem Bike saw gains of 61%, while the company also brought new third-party services under its umbrella, including rental cars, spas, and laundry services.

Completion of the latest deal with e& will see even more comprehensive services offered, though the investment is still subject to regulatory approval and other administrative procedures.

A consortium led by telecoms operator e& has completed a deal to acquire a majority share in the video streaming service StarzPlay Arabia.

The deal has meant that E-Vision, the entertainment arm of e&, along with Abu Dhabi holding company ADQ, now owns 57% of the MENA region’s fastest-growing video streaming service. After filing on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) on Tuesday, e& issued a statement, which read:

“This acquisition is in line with e&’s strategy to scale up the entertainment segment of e& life consumer digital vertical by accelerating E-Vision’s development on the video streaming segment, and significantly enhances StarzPlay Arabia’s positioning across the entire MENA region,” says e&.

The acquisition follows an initial announcement back in March that a deal would be taking place. Starz and parent company Lionsgate will maintain commercial agreements for content licensing.

Netflix, Shahid VIP, and the UAE-based StarzPlay Arabia currently control two-thirds of the MENA region’s over-the-top services (OTT) market, with StarzPlay controlling 20%.

The video streaming service expects annual revenue to climb by 40% from the previous year, with subscribers increasing by 20% to 2.1 million.

StarzPlay aims to reach profitability by the second quarter of 2024, and for e&, the collaboration will allow custom content options for customers, who will be able to utilize 5G download speeds to watch content on the go, with future plans for immersive VR experiences and augmented reality-based shows.
