Three months after its prototype debut in July, Xiaomi has officially launched the SU7 Ultra — a massively powerful electric sedan with luxury features — in the Chinese market. Boasting 1,500 horsepower, the model obliterates current performance standards for electric vehicles (EVs). The SU7 also caters to the high-end market with its top-tier specs and bold design. The capability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 2 seconds underscores Xiaomi’s commitment to pushing the EV performance envelope despite little experience in the automotive market.

The SU7 Ultra takes the design of Xiaomi’s standard SU7 to new levels with a focus on aerodynamics and sportier aesthetics. Key design elements include redesigned bumpers, a larger rear spoiler spanning 1.56 meters, and a widened body structure compared to its standard counterpart. Xiaomi claims these additions, along with an active rear diffuser, generate a downforce of up to 265 kg.

The SU7 Ultra is powered by CATL’s Qilin 2.0 battery, with a capacity of 93.7 kWh. This high-performance power pack supports a remarkable 5.2C DC fast-charging rate, enabling a 10-80% charge in just 11 minutes. With a maximum discharge power of 1,330 kW, the battery powers three electric motors, producing a combined 1,138 kW (or 1,526 hp) and peak torque of 1,770 Nm. With so much power on tap, the SU7 Ultra can reach 100 km/h in 1.98 seconds, 200 km/h in 5.86 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 350 km/h.

]]>
Motorsports — some may not view them as real sports, but nowhere else can you see man and machine working together in perfect harmony, pushing to the absolute limit of performance. While the best racing drivers in the world are battling it out on track, there’s another race going on behind the scenes: a battle of minds with some of the brightest engineers in the world working to extract every ounce of performance out of their machinery. Motorsports are as much a competition for the engineers and crew as it is for the drivers themselves.

At their very core, motorsports are all about finding an advantage over your competitors, however large or small, because every little bit counts. And the best way to gain a competitive edge over your rivals is to use data — tons and tons of it.

Using Data To Unlock On-Track Performance

Racing teams generate and analyze huge volumes of data per race; we’re talking tens of terabytes measuring every single aspect — even the most minute — of not only the vehicle’s performance but also the driver’s.

There are many different categories and classes of motorsports, ranging from road cars to purpose-built racing cars like in Formula One or bikes in the case of MotoGP. These two motorsports have the most popular championships in the world, but for simplicity’s sake, we’re going to stick with Formula One (F1), described as the very pinnacle of motorsports.

Teams collect data for three main reasons: to measure the vehicle’s performance on track, to measure the driver’s performance, and to help the engineers identify and understand key areas of improvement on the car.

F1 cars have thousands of sensors monitoring parameters such as tire temperature, brake temperatures, engine performance, component wear, and so on in real time (known as telemetry data). These teams can also use the data gathered, along with feedback they receive from the drivers, to make minor real-time adjustments to the car during the race, such as engine power settings. This telemetry, along with the weather information the teams gather, can also enable them to devise effective race strategies to decide exactly when to pit and change tires and what compound of tires to switch to, especially when weather conditions are unpredictable.

If this wasn’t impressive enough, the race engineers can also view the driver’s exact inputs: when they’re braking, accelerating, and turning into a corner, alongside a host of other information like heart rate and other biometric data. The engineers can then give them feedback on what is working and what isn’t, enabling the driver to adjust their approach to extract even more performance out of themselves and the car. It’s safe to say that in modern F1, even the cars are data-driven.

Data-Driven Development In The Factory

The petabytes of data gathered by racing teams on the track are then analyzed after the race to determine what areas of the car need improvement. Since F1 greatly restricts on-track testing, teams are forced to rely on incredibly complex simulations to develop the car. The more accurate data they use, the more accurate these simulations.

This data is also used by the team to develop F1 car simulators that are used by the drivers. These simulator rigs are much more accurate, complex, and unsurprisingly expensive compared to consumer simulator rigs. This simulator testing plays a major role in not only helping the engineers understand the characteristics of the car without having to perform on-track testing, but also in helping them set up the car for a race. Each track is different, and the car setup varies depending on the track and weather conditions during the race weekend.

Data Is King

In motorsports, every little advantage can make a difference. And with F1’s recently introduced budget cap, teams can no longer dump huge amounts of money to fix any issues with their cars, meaning data is now the most valuable currency in F1.

Big data analytics will only continue to play an increasingly prominent role in motorsports as has been the case since the early 80s. The most competitive teams are those that know how to effectively use the vast amounts of data at their disposal to drive innovation on the racetrack.

The post Bugatti Reveals New $4.1 Million Hypercar Dubbed The Tourbillon appeared first on Tech Magazine.

]]>
A new Bugatti hypercar, named the Tourbillon, will succeed the Chiron as the company aims to extend its dominance of the high-end automotive sector and secure its place within parent company Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, the Chiron’s 500-car production run ended with the $3.9 million Chiron Super Sport. Meanwhile, the last of the W16-powered models — the Bolide and W16 Mistral — will be delivered later this year.

The €3.8 million ($4.1 million) Tourbillon — French for whirlwind — pairs a 1800 horsepower, 8.3 liter naturally aspirated V-16 engine developed by Cosworth to a new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The hypercar also utilizes two electric motors — a first for the 115-year-old company. The Tourbillon can officially reach an electronically limited top speed of 445 kph (276 mph), though 300 mph+ speeds should technically be within reach. Finally, electric assistance means driving up to 37 miles without using the main power plant is possible.

Prospective second-hand car buyers in Dubai will soon be able to check a vehicle’s accident history in real-time, according to an announcement by the emirate’s police force. Law enforcement officials recently explained that a new system will use artificial intelligence (AI) to help buyers gain access to valuable data about crashes a car has been involved in, as well as its current mechanical condition.

Dubai Police have also announced the integration of AI into 29 administrative operations across multiple departments, with minor accidents also set to be analyzed and logged by AI-powered algorithms.

dubai police employs new ai features

Currently, Dubai drivers submit accident details for manual review by a police officer before a report is created. The new technology will instead use AI to analyze accident details and issue reports to both parties involved in minor traffic incidents.

It’s believed that the new tech could reduce accident report processing times from seven hours to four, and the service will soon be available on the Dubai Police app and through its web portal.

Major-General Khalid Nasser Alrazooqi, director of Dubai Police’s AI department, said the force has updated its app to offer 70 services in seven languages. Local police officers even have a virtual team member called Amna, who holds the rank of first lieutenant and is able to answer queries in Arabic and English. In 2023, Amna had already completed 20,000 conversations with the public.

As Dubai continues to deploy smart technology to improve its infrastructure, law enforcement is becoming increasingly automated. Since the beginning of this year, an AI-powered Smart Police Station (SPS) has operated without human officers, receiving 127,515 visitors and processing 36,376 transactions.
