Apple Watch users in the United Arab Emirates now have access to a new health feature designed to detect potential signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea after Apple secured marketing authorization from the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition where breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep, and often remains undiagnosed. Affecting an estimated one billion people globally, if untreated, sleep apnea can lead to health complications, including hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular issues.

This new detection feature utilizes the Apple Watch’s accelerometer to monitor wrist movements associated with interruptions in breathing. These “Breathing Disturbances” are analyzed by a specific Apple Watch metric, allowing users to view data in the Health app on their iPhone or iPad.

While occasional disturbances are normal, Apple’s monitoring focuses on patterns that occur frequently over multiple nights, as they may indicate sleep apnea. The app classifies breathing patterns as either elevated or not elevated, and users can track their breathing disturbance history over one-month, six-month, or one-year periods.

Every 30 days, Apple’s system analyzes the accumulated data for signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea. If it identifies consistent patterns, the user receives a notification advising them to consult a healthcare provider. The notification includes an educational section about sleep apnea risks, as well as a PDF summary containing three months of relevant data, which users can share with their doctors for further discussion.

The Sleep Apnea Notification algorithm was developed with advanced machine learning and a large dataset of clinical sleep apnea studies. Apple validated the feature in an extensive clinical trial, one of the largest conducted for sleep apnea detection technology. In this study, each participant identified by the algorithm as having a breathing disturbance showed at least mild sleep apnea.

Apple Close To Adding Diabetic Glucose-Tracking To Watches https://techmgzn.com/apple-close-to-adding-diabetic-glucose-tracking-to-watches/ https://techmgzn.com/apple-close-to-adding-diabetic-glucose-tracking-to-watches/#respond Fri, 24 Feb 2023 16:35:45 +0000 https://techmgzn.com/?p=2799 The Cupertino company has been trialing the technology for a decade, and it now looks like diabetes sufferers will soon be able to monitor glucose using their Apple watch.

The Apple Watch has become a popular health and fitness monitoring tool in recent years, with features including a heart rate monitor, body temperature sensor, blood oxygen monitoring, and women’s health tracking. However, despite a growing feature set, the watch does have one notable omission: blood glucose monitoring.

According to data from the World Health Organization, around 422 million people worldwide have diabetes. Currently, the disease is monitored using a finger-prick test to measure glucose levels or by attaching patches to the skin.

Apple is now reportedly close to adding a non-invasive glucose monitoring solution to its watches after testing various technologies for the best part of a decade. However, it could still be a few years before the device is ready for mass-market application.

If Apple’s monitoring sensors get the green light from medical professionals, its smartwatches could also be used to screen users for pre-diabetic indicators, as well as help long-term sufferers to manage their condition without the pain and inconvenience of skin-prick testing.

Apple will use a chip-based solution called “silicon photonics” to measure glucose levels, combined with absorption spectroscopy, which measures reflected light to gauge insulin. Although the technology hasn’t yet been peer-reviewed by scientists, the Cupertino company is thought to be deep into the proof-of-concept stage of testing.

Once Apple’s technology has been evaluated by researchers, the company will have to work on reducing the size of the chips, as experts believe that early prototypes are still too large to fit into the compact frame of a smartwatch.

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch Series 8 will ship with a body temperature sensor. The sensor would extend the device’s health tracking capabilities, something the Apple Watch Series 7 failed to accomplish.

Gurman shared this information last week in his Power On newsletter. “You can expect some new health-tracking features in this year’s Apple Watch,” he wrote.

Besides the regular Apple Watch Series 8, the body temperature sensor is expected to make its way into a new rugged edition of the smartwatch. Unfortunately, the lower-end Apple Watch SE, which is also scheduled for release later this year, is unlikely to get it.

The body temperature sensor won’t function like a traditional thermometer and give on-demand readings. Instead, it will alert the user when their temperature increases by a certain number of degrees above their baseline, which can vary from person to person.

It’s likely that Apple has decided to go with this approach to body temperature detection because it doesn’t require the sensor to be highly accurate.

Gurman also stated that other hardware changes would probably be minor. The Apple Watch Series 8 will probably use the same chip as the previous two models because Apple’s chip development team has been focused on the new M2 chips.

The use of the aging chip could keep the price of the Apple Watch Series 8 the same as the Apple Watch Series 7 despite the rising inflation and supply chain bottlenecks all tech manufacturers are currently experiencing.

On the other hand, Apple didn’t hesitate to increase the base price of the new MacBook Air from $999 to $1,199 when it announced the device in June 2022, so it’s possible that it won’t hesitate to increase the base price of the Apple Watch as well.

Apple has announced that its on-demand fitness subscription service, Apple Fitness+, is coming to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other countries on November 3.

Fitness+ was first announced during the company’s September 2020 Special Event, and it launched the same year in December. The service revolves around the Apple Watch, which is used to gather real-time workout data that are overlayed on top of guided workout videos spanning many different activities, including strength training, yoga, dancing, cycling, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and others.

“We created Fitness+ so everyone would have a place they feel inspired and motivated, no matter where they are on their fitness journey,” said Jay Blahnik, Apple’s vice president of Fitness Technologies. “We are so excited to be available to millions more people as we bring Fitness+ to 15 new countries next week, and can’t wait for them to meet our welcoming trainer team”.

Personal hygiene has come into focus in recent times amidst the global outbreak of a deadly infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. While COVID-19 is spread mainly through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, it can also be spread by touching a contaminated surface, such as the display on your Apple Watch. Coronavirus or not, it’s still always a good idea to give it a good clean once in a while to keep it looking as good as new, here’s how.

Step 1: Turn Off Your Apple Watch

The first step is the easiest. Simply disconnect your Apple Watch from its charge and turn it off. To do that:

  1. Press and hold the side button until the Power Off button appears.
  2. Then, slide the “Power Off” button to the right and wait a second or two.

Step 2: Remove The Watch Straps

While you could theoretically clean your Apple Watch with the strap attached to it (as long as it’s not made of leather), we recommend you remove it anyway because there will almost certainly be dirt and grime trapped where it attaches to the smartwatch.

  1. Press the band release button and don’t release it.
  2. Slide the band across in either direction to remove it.
  3. Repeat the process for the second strap.

You can now clean your Apple Watch straps with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. Silicone and stainless-steel bands can be cleaned using water, but leather straps can’t because they are not water-resistant.

Step 3: Clean Your Apple Watch

Your Apple Watch is now ready for cleaning. You should always use a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth and avoid hard scrubbing.

Gently wiping the surface of the watch using fresh water or a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe is okay, but avoid using bleach, abrasive soaps, and other aggressive cleaning products.

Once your Apple Watch is clean, you should pat it with a dry cloth so that it’s completely dry before you reconnect your watch straps. With that, your watch should be squeaky clean and as good as new.

If you’re an Apple kind of person, you’ll definitely want to read about their upcoming 8K VR headset that’s rumored to be released in 2022.
