Canvas provides a dedicated virtual space for writing and coding projects, allowing users to collaborate more efficiently with ChatGPT. It opens a separate window next to the chat interface, where users can place writing or code and select specific sections for the model to review. OpenAI describes it as functioning like a “copy editor or code reviewer”.

For writing tasks, ChatGPT can offer suggestions for edits, change text length, or adjust reading levels. It can even add relevant emojis for emphasis and color. Coders benefit from inline recommendations, debugging help, and the ability to translate code into various programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, or C++.

The initiative is the latest in the startup’s efforts to enhance public understanding of AI safety and was shared with staff during a company-wide meeting on Tuesday, July 9. OpenAI intends to present the levels to investors and other stakeholders, which span from conversational AI (Level 1) to AI that can independently operate an entire organization (Level 5).

During the meeting, OpenAI executives informed employees that the company is currently at the first level but is nearing the second level, known as Reasoners. This tier represents AI systems capable of basic problem-solving tasks comparable to a human with a doctorate-level education.

In the same session, OpenAI’s leadership demonstrated a research project featuring the GPT-4 AI model, showcasing new skills indicative of human-like reasoning. For years, the company has been working towards achieving what is often referred to as artificial general intelligence (AGI), which entails creating computers that can outperform humans in most tasks. Such systems do not yet exist, though OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously suggested that AGI might be achievable later this decade.

Determining the criteria for AGI has been a topic of ongoing debate among AI researchers. In a paper published in November 2023, researchers at Google DeepMind proposed a framework of five ascending AI levels, including “expert” and “superhuman”, which resembles the classification system used in the automotive industry for self-driving cars.

According to OpenAI’s proposed levels, the third tier on the road to AGI is called Agents, representing AI systems that can perform tasks autonomously over several days. Level 4 describes AI that can generate new innovations, while the highest level, Organizations, refers to AI capable of managing entire enterprises.

The framework, developed by OpenAI executives and senior leaders, is considered a work in progress. The company plans to collect feedback from employees, investors, and its board, with the possibility of refining the levels over time.

OpenAI has now addressed this limitation by introducing a memory feature to ChatGPT, enabling the bot to recall important information from past interactions and utilize it in subsequent queries.

The mechanism is straightforward: users can prompt ChatGPT to remember specific details, such as a child’s peanut allergy or an email signature preference. Subsequently, the bot stores this information and applies it to future interactions and tasks.

Furthermore, the system accumulates knowledge organically over time, enhancing its understanding of user preferences and requirements.

Each custom GPT instance, like Books GPT, maintains its distinct memory, enabling more tailored experiences. For instance, Books GPT can recall previously read books and preferred genres. This feature is particularly beneficial for those using the diverse range of chatbots available in the GPT Store.

Although no different to the data storage practices of Google and others, concerns regarding privacy persist. OpenAI assures users of control over ChatGPT’s memory, with sensitive topics such as health data not automatically retained. Users can instruct the bot to forget information, supplemented by subtle adjustments accessible through the Manage Memory tab in the settings. For those uncomfortable with the concept, the option to disable the feature entirely also exists.

Currently in beta, the memory feature is being gradually introduced to a limited number of ChatGPT free and Plus users, with plans for broader availability in the future. In the interim, those intrigued by the concept can glimpse into a future that’s beginning to look a lot like the movie “Her”.

According to Group-IB’s findings, the Asia-Pacific region suffered the greatest concentration of ChatGPT credentials offered for sale, followed by the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region in second place.

Group-IB tech experts explained that when employees take advantage of ChatGPT to optimize business communications and marketing texts, the queries and responses are stored within the AI app. Consequently, any unauthorized access to a ChatGPT account could unearth a wealth of sensitive information.

Group-IB’s dark web analysis revealed that most compromised ChatGPT accounts were breached by a popular malware program known as “Raccoon Info Stealer”. The virus is often sent by email and can be used by hackers to gain access to sensitive data stored in internet browsers.

In the MENA area, accounts from users in Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, and Turkey topped the “most-infected” list, potentially exposing companies in the region to multiple threat actors.

“Many enterprises are integrating ChatGPT into their operational flow,” explained Dmitry Shestakov, Head of Threat Intelligence at Group-IB. “Employees enter classified correspondences or use the bot to optimize proprietary code. Given that ChatGPT’s standard configuration retains all conversations, this could inadvertently offer a trove of sensitive intelligence to threat actors if they obtain account credentials. At Group-IB, we continuously monitor underground communities to identify such accounts promptly”.

To mitigate the risks posed by compromised ChatGPT accounts, Group-IB suggests that users update passwords using current best practices while also implementing two-factor authentication.

Artificial intelligence has been playing a major role in the lives of most people for several years now. It enables Face ID to recognize human faces, makes Google Search more accurate, and enhances the quality of smartphone photos and videos, just to give a few examples.

What these and most other examples of AI technology being put to practical use have in common is that they perform very specific tasks and do so without drawing attention to themselves.

ChatGPT is different. As a large language model, it generates text by iteratively posing the question, “Based on the current text, what should the next word be?” If you ask it, “What is the capital of Lebanon?” it will happily answer, “The capital of Lebanon is Beirut.” Remarkably, ChatGPT doesn’t retrieve this information from Wikipedia or some other source.

Instead, the AI and its approximately 1 trillion parameters were trained on a massive set of data obtained from books, the web, scientific articles, and other materials. All this training and subsequent fine-tuning have allowed ChatGPT to handle a wide range of tasks, such as answering complex questions, translating text between different languages, describing online memes, taking difficult law exams, or programming software applications.

Recently, ChatGPT has gained plugin support, so it can now browse the web, provide restaurant recommendations, do math, interact with over 5,000+ apps through Zapier, and much more.

Though not a perfect analogy, plugins can be “eyes and ears” for language models, giving them access to information that is too recent, too personal, or too specific to be included in the training data.

Because of ChatGPT’s unprecedented and rapidly growing capabilities, researchers are now debating whether it could be classified as an early example of artificial general intelligence (AGI), an AI system capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can. Regardless of whether it can or cannot be classified as an AGI, ChatGPT is already making waves in the Middle East.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has asked the authorities to do a study on ChatGPT and how the government can use the technology safely in education, health, and other industries.

The UAE’s AI minister, Omar Sultan Al Olama, has also spoken about the success of ChatGPT, saying that its level of output and engagement is beyond what many AI experts would have predicted just six months ago.

Yanzo, a text-based personal assistant that operates on WhatsApp, has recently become one of the first companies to supercharge their product with ChatGPT. Yanzo was initially considering IBM’s Watson and Netomi, but the moment ChatGPT came out, Mohammed Jaffar, the company’s co-founder and CEO, knew what the right decision was. Now, ChatGPT is the first in line to respond to user requests.

Yanzo provided 33,000 conversations, and after two weeks, the AI had learned its way of dealing with customer requests.

According to OpenAI, around 80% of workers could see their jobs impacted by ChatGPT. The most exposed occupations include mathematicians, tax preparers, financial analysts, writers, and web designers, but virtually all white-collar jobs exhibit some degree of exposure to AI.

There’s also the very important question of privacy and security. For large language models like ChatGPT to function effectively and serve various personal and business use cases, they need access to vast amounts of data, including personal information. This raises concerns about how this data is being collected, stored, and used, as well as who has access to it. Recently, it took just one bug in an open-source library for ChatGPT users to see other users’ chat histories.

Last but not least, readily accessible AIs like ChatGPT could be used to spread dangerous misinformation, propaganda, and hate speech. Therefore, it is crucial that businesses, governments, and civil society work together to ensure that AI systems are being used ethically and responsibly. After all, the real goal of the AI revolution in the Middle East should be to enhance people’s lives — not replace people with machines.

ChatGPT-4 is “less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios”, OpenAI said in a recent blog post, but it represents “the latest milestone in OpenAI’s effort in scaling up deep learning”.

Since its launch last November, ChatGPT’s popularity has exploded, with traffic to the site hitting over one billion visits.

The new version of the tool is said to have “human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks”. ChatGPT-4 can pass the lawyer’s bar exam in the 90th percentile, for example, while by comparison, GPT-3.5’s score was in the bottom 10%.

Who Can Use ChatGPT-4?

Microsoft’s Bing Chat was co-developed with OpenAI and has run on GPT-4 for the last five weeks. GPT-4 is also available to OpenAI’s paying users, and developers can enter a waiting list to gain access to the platform.

What Are The Limitations Of ChatGPT-4?

“Despite its capabilities, GPT-4 has similar limitations as earlier GPT models,” OpenAI said, with the software still prone to producing bad advice, buggy code, or inaccurate information.

The company has cautioned against using the chat tool in “high-stakes contexts” and advises human review to check facts and add additional context. However, OpenAI claims a 40% improvement in error reduction.

Since the release of ChatGPT, developers have been using the platform to build all manner of custom tools, including apps like QuickVid AI, which automatically generates ideas for YouTube videos. The app’s creator, Daniel Habib, explained that until now, it was impossible to monetize software featuring chatbot AI.

“All of these unofficial tools that were just toys, essentially, that would live in your own personal sandbox can now actually go out to tons of users,” Habib says.

OpenAI’s API release could mark the start of a new AI gold rush. What was previously a series of industrious hobbyists creating apps in a licensing gray area could soon become an entirely new industry.

“What this release means for companies is that adding AI capabilities to applications is much more accessible and affordable,” notes Hassan El Mghari, who manages TwitterBio, a ChatGPT service that generates Twitter profile text for users.

OpenAI has also updated its data retention policy and will now only hold user data for 30 days, promising it won’t use user-generated text inputs to train its AI models. This policy change means that companies will be in better control of their data rather than needing to trust a third party to manage where it goes.

In addition to better data-retention policies, API access to ChatGPT is now 10 times cheaper than OpenAI’s lower-powered GPT3 API, which launched in June 2020. The falling price of many of these large language models means there will likely be a plethora of AI chatbots to choose from in the near future.
